Short distance (only 4 ft)

Hi,
My wifi extender only seems to show a good connection within 4 feet of the actual router. I cannot place the extender further than 4 ft without it having a poor signal. It worked well for about 6 months placed about 10 feet away but now it no longer does. When it’s so close to the actual router, it doesn’t boost the signal to my other rooms. 
I have tried resetting it and moving it to several locations, all within line of sight to the router itself and it always says the connection is poor. It basically doesn’t do anything anymore. Has anyone found a way to fix this?
