My comcast modem/router does not have a button to press to contact the extender. Am I supposed to bring my laptop in the same room and try to set up the extender so it is close to both the router and the extender ?

Dear MJ,
In this case, Connect with the Rockspace extender and then try the default IP address 192.168.0.254 on the browser. login with the Default password “admin”. Select the Home WiFi and type the regular WiFi password. After that you’ll be able to connect your extender with the Comcast Modem.
